What is the Made-in-Minnesota solar production based incentive program?

The Minnesota legislature established a solar photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal incentive program for consumers who install PV and solar thermal systems using solar modules and collectors certified as manufactured in Minnesota. The program is administered by the Minnesota Department of Commerce.

Made-in-Minnesota program highlights:

  • Application period is from January 1st through February 28th each year (2014-2023) and awarded on a lottery basis.
  • The MiM solar incentive program has an annual budget of $15 million, split equally between residential and commercial sites for each of the 10 years.

Solar Electric benefits for a Made-in-Minnesota Solar PV array are:

  • A solar array has a 25 year life-span with a financial payback of less than 13 years.
  • MiM covers over 35% of the installed cost.
  • Minimize your carbon footprint by over 103 tons of CO2 over the life of the array.

A 3.54 kW system for a 100 amp electrical service is estimated to produce over $5,200 in MiM incentives over 10 years, which is approximately a $50 electrical bill. Participants can see a savings of up to 65% or more of the initial cost of system with performance based incentive programs and Federal Income Tax credit. Additional savings could be found in utility energy savings produced by the solar array.
